Why Shouldn’t Your Blog Be Your Home Page?

Posted by Renzie on February 18, 2008

Google has always been my default home page for as long as I can remember.  Lately though, I’ve noticed that when I fire up my Firefox browser, I check out three things right away: mail (on my gmail account), Facebook (alright, so I’m probably marginally addicted…), and Multiply (…marginally addicted to social networking!).

From there, I’d go to check on my usual websites- check out some entertainment news, or the latest music chart movements, or the latest news in gaming- or do some online business like pay some bills or something.

The rest of my day will be spent blogging, and linking references into my blog, or checking out any other variety of social networking and social bookmarking sites from YouTube to Technorati.  I’ve gone to the point of actually spending more than 8 hours a day online- including the time I spend in front of the PC after work- which is to say I’m either playing World of Warcraft or doing even more blogging.

I suppose this is all really about putting some much-needed order into my life.  There’s just so much going on already, and there’s probably much more going on later on, so I suppose I’ll have to make way for new stuff coming through.

So the first order of business is to set this blog “The Life and Times of The Renzie Man” as my home page.  Let’s see how that works out.  Gonna work on getting this blog just a little bit more functional: at least as far as we can fine-tune it- the free version of WordPress doesn’t seem to support some of the things I’d like to have just now.

Gonna put more link lists, and RSS feeds and widgets on the side.  Just to make this an easier springboard to get into other sites. It also means more updates from time to time, probably on a more daily basis.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Verry Eenteresting…

Posted by Renzie on December 5, 2007

The following post originally came out in one of my other blogs, “Blog. Blogger. Bloggest!”. Check out the rest of that blog for more insights on the world of blogs and blogging. Particularly useful for you who are just starting to blog, and those wanting to build better blogs. Enjoy!

Holy crap!

I was at the eCommerista Night 2.0 event last night at Mag:net cafe. Though the turnout wasn’t as big as the last one, this one was still quite alright. I showed up with one of my business associates, and by the time the night was over, we already have at least three speakers lined up for our next few events, and the promise of future projects and collaborations.

Andrian Lee has always been such a fun speaker. What struck me was a little story he shared: that, recently, Facebook use in the UK has actually exceeded email usage.

Wow, that huge, huh?

And not entirely unbelievable, I suppose. Run a Google search on Facebook usage in the UK, and you can already get a feel of how widespread -as well as controversial- Facebook is.

Apparently, everyone in the UK is doing it- and is extremely hooked on it. Heck, if you have Facebook, you know it’s easy to get addicted to it. So much so that companies have banned Facebook outright at the workplace. While BBC has, in a recent newscast, reported that employees should be allowed to use Facebook on breaks, during lunchtime- and the controversy just goes on.

So is it really a surprise that Facebook use can, one day, replace our need for email? We can email family, friends and colleagues on Facebook anyway, right? Lay down some smack on a few vampires, share and tag photos, give virtual drinks, and even flirt online?

Heck, I’m addicted myself. I’ve even RSS’ed Facebook straight into my Gmail accounts. That way, I don’t miss out on the moment someone throws sheep at me. Whatever :)

More interesting facts: the Philippines accounts for one-third of all Friendster activity online, and up to a quarter of all worldwide activity on Multiply.

It’s really all you need: Facebook, Multiply, and Friendster. OK, Myspace, if you have toh have a fourth one. Good God. Have we really too much spare time on our hands?

Wanna know your true self?

Posted by Renzie on August 5, 2007

Hey. If you’re the type who digs checking out online personality quizzes and all, you may want to check out PersonalDNA.com. All you have to do is take a short little quiz, answer as truthfully as you can, and get your results right away!
According to these guys, I’m supposed to be an “Advocating Leader”- like Adolf Hitler, only a lot more nurturing. Or something like that.
Though it would be nice to know what other kinds of personalities you have out there. Or what kind of percentage of people who’ve taken the test are the same as you are. Or what kinds of people you’re likely to get along with, or butt heads with. In any case, it was entertaining enough to warrant me writing about it. Read more about my results right here.
Do check it out. In the meantime, I’ll go fancy myself as a William Adama. With my own battlestar to command and all that.

Checked out Facebook yet?

Posted by Renzie on August 5, 2007

Holy crap! If you guys haven’t tried out Facebook yet, maybe you should give it a whirl. I just spent an entire Sunday morning trying out all the cool apps on it: you could make your very own Simpsons and Southpark avatars, load a couple of widgets on your favorite shows, take some personality tests, share files, and a whole lot of other great stuff.
I’ve been using Facebook these days to keep in touch with my relatives (Mom’s side, anyway). Yeah you could make new friends too, look for new business contacts, or just plain network away to your hearts content. Compared to the other online social networking sites, Facebook sure is choc-full of fun, but for some reason (I may have just missed it though), I couldn’t seem to find a way to customize the URL to make it more ‘me’.
In any case, you may want to check it out. Look me up, add me to your ‘Friends’ list. Should be awesome.
